IN GROUND SWIMMING POOL LEAK DETECTION
I started diving pools in 1980 assisting a pool company with underwater tasks, which was previously not available to them. I patched liners and checked drains and pool lights. Later, I was asked if I could detect a leak in a pool’s plumbing.
I had to figure out how to find a leak on my own as no one had ever heard of anyone doing this. I proceeded to come up with ways to plug off and isolate the plumbing and apply pressure to pipe. The leak locating was primitive. Now, 35 years later, I have developed my own tools and techniques which I consider innovative and accurate for pool leak detection.
Once I was asked if I had any of the “sonar” or “ultrasonic” leak detectors as a very prestigious client was worried if had the latest equipment. I replied, “I can find a leak with a garden hose and a coat hanger.” It’s not the fancy equipment that finds the leak, it’s an understanding of the leak and the physics and hydraulics it takes to find it. And yes, I can find a leak with a coat hanger and garden hose.
As a long time board member of a national leak association, I was blessed with being in contact and friends with other leak locators across the nation. I was one of the pool leak trainers for our national conventions. This afforded me pool leak detection experience from California to Florida, experiencing all kinds of pools and conditions.
Having graduated from Purdue University in Construction and Architecture and working as a Commercial Project Manager and Estimator, I have a good understanding of pool construction and building. This knowledge does help in understanding pool leak detection and causes. I consider leak detection just something I do to help resolve your pool problems.
